Curly Girl Method: What it is and why you should try it

Feb 14, 2025, Oli

Do you long for beautiful, healthy and naturally defined curls, but your hair looks more like a frizzy mane than perfect waves? Maybe it's time to give them what they really need! Curly Girl Method (CGM method).

What is the CGM method

A revolutionary approach to the care of wavy and curly hair that can turn it into a true crown of beauty - without chemicals, without damage, just the right hydration and gentle care. This method was introduced years ago by British hairdresser Lorraine Massey, who promoted care without sulphates, silicones and drying alcohols, helping many people discover the natural beauty of their curls.

Sound like magic? Maybe a little. But the truth is, the right care can do wonders for curly hair. The Curly Girl Method isn't just a trend - it's a lifestyle for anyone who wants to treat their hair to the best.

Main principles of CGM

  • No sulphates - aggressive foaming ingredients (e.g. SLS, SLES) dry the hair and strip it of its natural oils. Gentle cleansing agents are used instead.
  • No silicones - silicones form an impermeable film on the hair that can only be removed by sulphates. Instead, lighter moisturizing ingredients are used.
  • No drying alcohols - some alcohols (such as isopropyl alcohol) can dehydrate hair.
  • No hot air blow drying - if blow drying is necessary, do so with a diffuser and on cold/medium heat.
  • No dry brushing - instead, comb hair with fingers or a wide-toothed comb in the shower with conditioner.
  • Moisture-rich care** - curly hair tends to be dry, so moisturising masks, rinse-free conditioners and oils are used.
  • Load-free styling - gels, creams and mousses without harmful ingredients are used to define waves and curls.

Who is CGM ideal for?

Wavy hair (2A-2C) - the method helps to define waves and prevent them from becoming limp
Curly hair (3A-3C) - curls are highlighted, frizz is reduced and hair gains more elasticity
Afro hair (4A-4C) - the method adds the necessary hydration, helps with definition and prevents hair breakage
Damaged hair - if the hair is dry, brittle or chemically treated (e.g. dyed, bleached), the method can help it recover

Who may not be comfortable with the method?

Rough hair (1A-1C) - if the hair does not have natural waviness or curl, the method will not give the desired effect
Very fine and easily weighed down hair - some products may be too moisturising and cause flyaways
Quick and easy care - CGM requires patience and trying different products and techniques to find the right one

The method is especially great for those who want to stop fighting their waves and curls and instead embrace them and enhance their natural beauty. 🌿✨

How to get started with CGM?

1️⃣ First Step: Deep Cleaning

Before you go all out with CGM, it's important to rid your hair of any build-up from previous products. This is done with a "final wash" - a final shampoo with sulphates but without silicones. This step will ensure that any styling residue that could hinder hydration is removed from the hair.

2️⃣ Switch to gentle washing

After the "final wash" it's time to forget about aggressive sulphate shampoos and switch to gentler washing methods:

Low-poo - gentle, sulfate-free shampoos that cleanse without drying
Co-wash - washing hair with conditioner only, which also removes impurities

Wet the hair thoroughly, apply the cleanser to the scalp and massage gently with your fingertips. Then rinse thoroughly.

3️⃣ Deep hydration

Curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair, so regular moisturisation is key. After washing, apply a nourishing conditioner to the lengths of the hair and gently comb through with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. Leave on for a few minutes and then rinse.

TIP: For even deeper nourishment, include moisturising masks to give your hair the nutrients it needs.

4️⃣ Styling for perfect curls

For beautifully defined curls, it is important to apply styling products to wet or at least damp hair. Ideal choices are:

✔ Gels - for maximum fixation and definition
✔ Cream products - for a softer and more natural look

Gently squeeze the hair towards the head when styling to encourage curl formation and reduce frizz.

5️⃣ Correct drying without damage

Curly hair is very sensitive to mechanical damage, so avoid rough rubbing with a towel! Instead, gently dry your hair with a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel.

✔ Allow hair to air dry freely or
✔ Use a low temperature diffuser for faster drying and better definition

6️⃣ Patience produces perfect results

Transitioning to the Curly Girl Method takes time. Hair must adjust to the new routine, which can take several weeks to months. The result? Hydrated, healthy and beautifully defined curls you'll love! ✨
